A Derivation of the Luminosity Function of the Kuiper Belt from a Broken Power-Law Size Distribution
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have derived a model of the Kuiper belt luminosity function exhibited by a broken power-law size distribution. This model allows direct comparison of the observed luminosity function to the underlying size distribution. We discuss the importance of the radial distribution model in determining the break diameter. We determine a best-fit break-diameter of the Kuiper belt size-distribution of 30 < Db < 90 km via a maximum-likelihood fit of our model to the observed luminosity function. We also confirm that the observed luminosity function for m(R) ∼ 21−28 is consistent with a broken power-law size distribution, and exhibits a break at m(R) = 26.0 −1.8.

Keck Pencil-beam Survey for Faint Kuiper Belt Objects
We present the results of a pencil-beam survey of the Kuiper Belt using the Keck 10-m telescope. A single 0.01 square degree field is imaged 29 times for a total integration time of 4.8 hr. Combining exposures in software allows the detection of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) having visual magnitude mV ∼< 27.9. Two new KBOs are discovered. One object having mV = 25.5 lies at a probable heliocentric...

We have performed an ecliptic imaging survey of the Kuiper belt with our deepest and widest field achieving a limiting flux of m(g)50% ∼ 26.4, with a sky coverage of 3.0 square-degrees. This is the largest coverage of any other Kuiper belt survey to this depth. We detect 72 objects, two of which have been previously observed. We have improved the Bayesian maximum likelihood fitting technique pr...
متن کاملThe luminosity function of the hot and cold Kuiper belt populations
We have performed an ecliptic survey of the Kuiper belt, with an areal coverage of 8.9 square degrees to a 50% limiting magnitude of rSloan 1⁄4 24:7, and have detected 88 Kuiper belt objects, roughly half of which received follow-up 1–2 months after detection. Using this survey data alone, we have measured the luminosity function of the Kuiper belt, thus avoiding any biases that might come from...
متن کاملA Wide-field Ccd Survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects
A modiÐed Baker-Nunn camera was used to conduct a wide-Ðeld survey of 1428 deg2 of sky near the ecliptic in search of bright Kuiper Belt objects and Centaurs. This area is an order of magnitude larger than any previously published CCD survey for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects. No new objects brighter than red magnitude and moving at a rate 1A to 20A hr~1 were discovered, although m R \ 18.8 o...
متن کاملAccretion in the Early Kuiper Belt II. Fragmentation
We describe new planetesimal accretion calculations in the Kuiper Belt that include fragmentation and velocity evolution. All models produce two power law cumulative size distributions, NC ∝ r for radii ∼< 0.3–3 km and NC ∝ r for radii ∼> 1–3 km. The power law indices are nearly independent of the initial mass in the annulus, M0; the initial eccentricity of the planetesimal swarm, e0; and the i...
